The Texas Education Agency has posted the proposed revisions to the Prekindergarten Guidelines for public comment. The deadline for submitting comments is April 15, 2008. Directions for doing so are in the information below (from the TEA website).
I have previously questioned the process that was used to develop these proposed Guidelines, and the lack of transparency in that process. You can see my prior post on this issue here.
Now that the draft Guidelines have been released, one thing immediately jumps out. There does not appear to have been any effort to align these Guidelines with the English/Language Arts curriculum that has received so much attention of late.
Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines Revisions Draft Available for Public Comment
Deadline to Submit Comments: April 15, 2008
The Texas Education Agency (TEA) tasked the State Center for Early Childhood Development (State Center) with facilitating the process to revise the Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines (guidelines). The revised guidelines were developed with the expertise of writing teams and state and national experts, along with input gathered from public forums across the state.
This feedback has been incorporated into the current draft of the guidelines, and we are seeking additional stakeholder feedback on this draft before it is presented to the State Board of Education for review in May 2008 and for final approval by the commissioner of education. The final guidelines will be comprehensive, including the following skill domains: Language, Emergent Literacy, Mathematics, Science, Social/Emotional, Fine Arts, Social Studies, Health/Safety, Technology, and Physical Development. The guidelines will remain voluntary and will guide publishers in revising prekindergarten instructional materials in the future.
Deadline and Procedures for Public Comment:
The deadline for public comment is April 15, 2008. Comments received after April 15 will not meet the deadline for consideration. Comments must be in writing (via e-mail or U.S. mail). A Response Form has been provided for your convenience; however, you may submit your comments in any written format. We suggest that you submit comments collaboratively through a larger group (educational organization, ISD, ESC, etc.). When commenting please disregard formatting, style, and grammatical errors as these will be corrected during the editing process.
