Our Board held its regular monthly meeting tonight. Here's a recap of the issues discussed and actions taken on tonight's Agenda.
We had five special presentations this evening. First, our January 2008 Employee of the Month is Sherri Vierling, the Transportation Manager in the District's Transportation Department.
Our January 2008 Volunteer of the Month is Wyn Norris from Northbrook Middle School who has been the driving force in building the "Golden Dome Mentor Alliance," a cadre of nearly 75 Notre Dame Alumni, spouses and friends who are mentors at Northbrook Middle.
Our third special presentation was the presentation of our rebate in the amount of $26,818.90 for energy efficiency from CenterPoint's Texas SCORE Program.
The next special presentation was the presentation of the recipients of the J. Landon Short Mini-Grants for Educators.
Our final special presentation was in recognition of School Board Recognition Month.
We then had Citizens Participation during which no one spoke.
Next on our agenda was the annual Joint Public Hearing for the 2007 Academic Excellence Indicator System (AEIS). The AEIS report reflects that our TAKS scores continue to improve, and the gaps among our student groups continues to shrink. Much more detailed information is available in the PowerPoint presentation.
We then received Board Member Liaison reports from each Board member.
The next item on the Agenda was our Quarterly Investment report.
As the Board has been doing for some time, we continued our revision of our Board Policies with first readings of FFAC (Local) Wellness and Health Services: Medical Treatment, and DCB (Local) Employment Practices: Educator Term Contracts, and the adoption of DEA (Local) Compensation and Benefits: Salaries, Wages and Stipends, CFE (Local) Accounting: Payroll Procedures, and TASB Policy Update 81.
The Board approved the Budget Status Summary Report with Budget Amendments as of December 31, 2007, the Facility Improvement Program Monthly Status Report with Project Detail Changes as of December 31, 2007, and a number of contracts.
We also approved the Order setting our School Board Election for May 10, 2008, and we also approved a Resolution Calling for a Joint Election with the City of Piney Point and Spring Branch ISD.
The Board has previously discussed the increasing costs and funding issues concerning our Pre-Kindergarten program. As a result, Pre-Kindergarten Tuition for 2008-2009 will be increased from $4050 ($450 per month) to $4500 ($500 per month) for students who are not exempt from paying tuition.
One of the more controversial items on the Board's calendar each year is adoption of the District's calendar. Tonight, we adopted the Academic Calendar for 2008-2009 (Alternate Recommendation found on page 170 -- 3rd page of link). As I previously posted, the issues with the calendar are now largely a function of the Legislatively mandated start date and the resulting compression of the calendar.
The Board approved the District's Program of Studies ((part 1) and (part 2)) for Middle and High School which define and provide detailed explanations of the required and elective courses with descriptions of each for each grade level.
Finally, we approved Teacher Incentive Pay amounts, the Elementary Mathematics Textbook Adoption Committees, and our Consent Agenda.
